How to take Development feedback notes

We endeavour to make the process of receiving feedback as fun and stressless as possible. After all, it’s your baby we’re discussing. So we do our best to be clear and concise. We will convey the salient points in a direct yet courteous way and we hope you take such notes with equally good graces. When you get notes, try not to jump to conclusions by skim reading. For example, a note like ‘your first act doesn’t establish a clear objective for the hero’. This could indicate a massive rewrite [aargh], months of re-structuring and plotting [more aargh]. However, when read in a few days time it could, coupled with other notes, simply mean the revision of some key scenes. In short… read the notes… take a breath… take some more breaths. Take a few days and read the notes a few more times until you can view them objectively. It’s a natural reaction to push back and disagree.

What's included in the report?

You will get a professionally headed report. Length depends on several factors. Each script requires a different focus. The report is generally broken down into headings covering A Synopsis, Characterisation, World of the Story, Structure, Stakes and Dialog. Depending on the script and the revision, we may also cover writing style and commercial viability. Conclusions and Recommendations are also included.

Why do you provide a synopsis?

The synopsis is key both for the writer and reader as it ensures both understand the story in the same way.

Can I send concept art to help explain my vision for the project?

Not for Script submissions. As a commercial stand alone, selling document, the script must be self-contained. The vision needs to be clear on the page and developed by the action.

What if i need feedback quicker?

We will endeavour to return reports as quickly as possible. If you require comments prior to two weeks please contact us. There may be an additional charge.

Do you proof-read the scripts?

No, unfortunately we do not offer a proof-reading service and, although we endeavour to correct any errors we see, we do not offer line by line corrections.

Will the report cover formatting?

Generally, yes. Scriptwriting is personal and styles are subjective so we tend to offer broad advice if we feel the writer needs help. For example; overwriting, being ‘on the nose’ or excessive dialogue. In such instances we may rewrite short sections by way of an example.

What happens to the scripts and reports?

The script and the report content belong to you. We claim or seek no credit to the work. We do not share, distribute or publish in any way either whole or by extract. All correspondence is completely confidential. For more information, please refer to our Privacy Policy.

Can we talk to you about the feedback?

Of course. You can book a Script Development Call via the website.

How do I use the notes to change my script?

There are no hard and fast rules. We advise writers not to make direct changes to their script unless they are in the latter stages of development with a near production quality draft. Structural changes are best taken back to 1 and 4 page outlines to enable rewrites to be done efficiently.

Outline Development Reports

What's included in the report?

You will get professional, headed notes. Length depends on several factors. Each outline requires a different focus. The notes are generally broken down into Synopsis, Characterisation, World of the Story, structure. Conclusions and Recommendations are also included.

Can I send concept art to help explain my vision for the project?

Yes, but be very selective. It’s often just as easy to categorise your film by similar projects such as the tone of Alien or the grit of John Wick.

Development Call

How do we call?

The call will be held across Skype audio, so if you don’t have a Skype account, you can set one up for free here https://www.skype.com or by googling ‘Skype’ from your respective country. The process is pretty straight forward and free to call anywhere in the world

When will the call be scheduled?

Usually within 7 days of payment being received. A convenient time will be arranged via email.

What if I have a lot to cover?

An hour can go really quickly so it’s best to make a short list of the topics you want to cover in advance and prioritise those in case we run out of time. If you can email that through before the call it would be helpful.

Can I talk about my script?

Yes, if you have previously engaged us to undertake a Script or Outline Report. Please do not send  material unsolicited, such as a script or outline if we’ve not previously worked together.

You’re in the UK and I’m in the USA - how will that work?

I have clients in the US and can generally arrange a convenient time to call, however, due to international time differences this may invariably be outside office hours. Please note I do not schedule calls between 11pm and 7am GMT / BST.

Can I record the call?

Yes, you are free to record the call for your own purposes, however, there is no consent for public broadcast of that recording. If that’s your intention, please email prior to payment.
